The A1 is part of a major long distance route from London to the North East and Scotland. This section of A1 in North Yorkshire is of particular importance to the North East of England as it is the only dual carriageway link with the south.

A £38m project to upgrade this section is due to start early in 2006.

The work is part of a £520m plan to develop the A1 into a three-lane motorway on a 60-mile stretch between Ferrybridge and Barton.
