The Secretary of State announced his decision on 5 October 2001 to allow the Ministry of Defence (MOD) to expand the Otterburn Training Camp.

The Highways Agency is currently undertaking a programme of works on behalf of the MOD to harden verges along the A696 to provide passing points for Army tank convoys travelling to and from the Otterburn Training Area.
